Sustainability Reporting in Ghana: A Sectoral Analysis of the Banking, Mining and Energy Industries Through the Lens of IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 Sustainability Disclosure Standards
This article examines the state of sustainability reporting in Ghana across three strategically critical sectors—banking, mining and energy—within the framework established by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) through IFRS S1 (General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information) and IFRS S2 (Climate-related Disclosures). Drawing on real data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Ghana Minerals Commission and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the article assesses the extent to which sectoral regulators, reporting entities and governing frameworks are aligned with the disclosure pillars prescribed by IFRS S1 and S2: governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets. The analysis reveals significant progress within the banking sector, anchored by the BoG's Sustainable Banking Principles and the 2024 Climate-Related Financial Risk Directive, and demonstrates the mining sector's dominant economic contribution alongside nascent but evolving sustainability disclosure obligations. In the energy sector, the NPA's evolving regulatory architecture and Ghana's Energy Transition Policy are assessed against IFRS S2's climate scenario analysis and physical risk disclosure requirements. The article concludes with a cross-sectoral assessment and recommendations for corporate preparers, regulators and policymakers as Ghana approaches its January 2027 mandatory IFRS S1 and S2 adoption deadline.
